I’m so excited to introduce you to Charlaine Martin. Charlaine’s newest book, Twice Blessed: Learning to Live and Love Again, is a beautiful story of how God showed up in her life when she needed Him most. Unfortunately, Charlaine’s husband of 29 years passed away from a long battle with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. After his passing, she went through tremendous grief and took her many questions to God. In return, He gave her the courage and ability to write this book to help others as they go through their own stages of grief.
If you’ve lost a spouse to a long-term illness, this book is for you!
Now let’s meet Charlaine.

What personal experience or research first led you to write this book?
I walked through stage 4 colon cancer for four years, was with him when he died, and I had to figure out how to live without my high school sweetheart. My husband, whom I now call Boaz, found me, and we’ve been happily married for eleven years.
Who do you hope will benefit most from your message, and how?
My hope is for widows and widowers to see how God was with them in their own journeys with their late spouses, and He is with them now. I offer them the opportunity to process their own stories as they work through grief, learn to live on, and find love again.
What was the most surprising thing you discovered while writing or researching your book?
I knew God was with me as I lived through my story, but I was surprised to find more of His presence in those circumstances that seemed so dark and alone. In the process of writing Twice Blessed, I’ve met several couples who are Twice Blessed, in which at least one member of the couple lost their first Love.
What’s one piece of advice you’d share with aspiring nonfiction writers who want to publish?
When writing personal stories, your initial writings are a form of therapy. Sometimes we want to rush the process, but God has the right timing. In the editing and clean-up process, think through who would read your story and why. It’s their why that directs your final writing process. Always pray it through, allowing God to give you the “The door is open” signal.
Fun question: If your book were turned into a documentary, what would the theme song be?
