Today, I’m excited to introduce you to Sandy K. Slawson, the author of A Ruby Red Perspective, among others. She is an amazing writer known for writing Christian historical romance novels, flash fiction, and short stories, and you can find her work in Guideposts and Spark Flash Fiction Magazine. Sandy is also a blogger for her own blog as well as a contributor to the MomQ blog.

I recently read Sandy’s book, A Ruby Red Perspective, and just loved it. It’s flash fiction, so I don’t want to give away any spoilers. You’ll just have to read it to find out why I loved it so much!

Let’s meet Sandy!

A Ruby Red Perspective by Sandy K. Slawson; Christian fiction; book on forgiveness; Christian proofreader; Christian author; Michelle Miller Proofreading

What inspired you to start writing, and how did that spark grow into your first book?

I started writing as a hobby in childhood, and it continued that way for many years. But when my last two children were close to leaving the nest, I began to take my writing, and myself as a writer, seriously. I finished my first novel in 2018 and have since written two other Christian Historical Romance novels. As I seek representation with the goal of a traditional publishing contract, I continue to write long and short stories, edit, and work to build my readership.

What do you hope readers take away from your work?

That forgiveness is necessary in every relationship, and true love always begins with God’s timeless and everlasting love, which is found in Jesus Christ alone.

What part of the writing or publishing process has stretched you the most, and how did you overcome it?

The business side of writing is challenging for me. It forces this introvert out of my comfort zone to connect with other writers, industry professionals, and readers, risking rejection at every turn. What I have found, though, is that I have gained far more than I’ve lost, and the friendships developed and lessons learned have been invaluable.

What advice would you give to writers who are just beginning their journey?

This is indeed a journey, and the joy is not just in goals attained, but in the entire process, which more often than not takes years. And shortcuts are not beneficial in this business. Each step, from writing the first draft to traditional or self-publishing that book, should be taken with careful preparation, input from professionals, and plenty of prayer.

Fun question: If your main character invited you over for dinner, what would they serve?

Roasted mutton and gravy, with mash and peas, Yorkshire pudding, and a treacle tart for dessert.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

While working on my long-form fiction, I attempt to provide my readers with entertaining flash and short stories, other interesting tidbits, and updates to hold them over until my first novel is available. Monthly, I introduce them to one such story, or to other wonderful wordsmiths. I’d be honored if you subscribed to my newsletter and joined me in this beautiful, scary, and blessed writing life.
