Being a freelance proofreader is such a rewarding job!

I’ve had several jobs throughout my time on Earth (including working for the Home Shopping Network, Hallmark, and at a Dairy Queen for almost 9 years!), but proofreading is by far my favorite.

However, owning your own business and working for yourself isn’t always easy. I have had to learn how to balance home life and career life. And I’m still learning!

In this post, I’ll share my top 5 tips for having a good work-life balance as a freelance proofreader. These are things I’ve learned the hard way throughout my career.

Tip #1: Create a Dedicated Workspace

In the middle of trying to set up my proofreading business, we moved. My workspace became anywhere I could find, and most of the time there were too many distractions. Finally, I set up a desk in the corner of my bedroom that’s only used for work. It’s a physical boundary that helps me mentally separate work from other household duties. Also, it helps me “leave” work at the end of my day.

I think the main challenge of being a freelance proofreader is finding a dedicated (and organized) space to work. A space that’s devoted specifically for work will boost your productivity, improve concentration, and help you maintain a healthy work-life balance. It’s also nice to have a space where you can access all your resources quickly when you need them.

Tip #2: Set a Schedule and Stick to It

This has been the hardest one for me. I’ve worked through many schedules and routines to finally find the one that works best for me. I’ve tried to do all the tasks in one day, which left me exhausted! Finally, I found a schedule that helps me get different tasks done on different days. Of course, this changes when I have a tight deadline for a proofreading job, but it’s easy to get back into.

Tip #3: Use Time-Blocking Techniques

I’ve tried time-blocking in the past, but it didn’t work as well for me. However, I’m learning more about it now and finding that time-blocking a few tasks works better for me than time-blocking an entire day. I want to be able to time-block an entire week! I came across a course that I’m hoping to purchase next year to learn more about this.

Tip #4: Take Advantage of Your Power Hour

One of my best tips for having a good work-life balance as a freelance proofreader is to take advantage of your power hour.  

I do my best work in the mornings. I’m more focused and have more motivation, and that’s when my brain is full of ideas. Because I know this about myself, I start my day by focusing on my most important tasks first. I spend an hour proofreading, working on a blog post, or doing admin tasks depending on the day.

Tip #5: Practice Regular Self-Care

As a mom and wife, this is the hardest one for me, even though I know it’s probably the most important. I’m always so busy taking care of others that sometimes I forget to take care of myself. However, at the end of every day, I make sure to do something just for me – whether it’s reading for fun, online Bible study, or crocheting.

It’s so important to take care of yourself, especially as a freelance proofreader. If you aren’t feeling well, you won’t do your best at your job. Practicing self-care is important to maintaining productivity, mental health, and overall job satisfaction. It can also promote a healthy work-life balance. Here’s how:

  • Take regular breaks to reduce eye strain and prevent burnout.
  • Stretch to alleviate physical discomfort (sitting for long hours is bad for your health!)
  • Take a walk to boost energy levels
  • Find a hobby to support your mental well-being
